New issue reflects an emphasis on a happy and fulfilling life.
When Peaceburgh magazine published its first issue in March, it became Pittsburgh's only print magazine devoted to positive stories of health, promoting a higher consciousness towards prosperity, and embracing the highest wisdom of all the world's spiritual teachings. As a part of the Peaceburgh Network, it was one more element of the web-based multimedia network promoting professionals, organizations and businesses who work toward making the world a better, and more peaceful, place.
What was quickly discovered is that the print aspect of the network needed its own name to help eliminate confusion between the print and website. Thus "Heatlh•Wealth•Wisdom" magazine became the second issue of Peaceburgh in print. Ben Franklin's adage about when to rise and retire for the day gave inspiration to the new name. Healthy, wealthy and wise were the adjectives he used to describe a happy and fullfilling life. Health, wealth and wisdom are the nouns—the things—which we all seek, and which will be the focus of the magazine.
Specifically, “Health" may be thought of as a current state but also as a meaningful goal. Sometimes the two are the same, but often not. Most of us would like to BE healthier, but don’t have the time or wisdom or discipline to make it happen.
“Wealth" is also quite relative. When compared to where you want to BE, you might think of yourself as lacking. But consider what percentage of the world’s population can take a hot shower (less than 50%), or even has access to clean water at all (only 75%). Imagine trying to raise a family with no clean water available at all and you might reconsider how wealthy you are. Appreciation for what we do have, obviously, goes a long way towards evaluating one’s wealth needs and wants. Wealth should also be measured in more than just money, of course. A “poor” person wealthy in family and friends is usually happier than a lonely millionaire.
“'Wisdom' is more than having access to a blizzard of data. It is the ability to sort that data into a meaningful context from which to view the world. This context helps us to keep an even keel in heavy seas, as the wisdom of a higher perspective almost always helps to keep one’s emotions, and one’s life, in balance.
The Summer 2010 issue is now available free at hundreds of locations around Western PA. The cover story details how AGH is using the latest mind-body techniques to de-stress the staff as well as the patients. There is also a guide to the area's Buddhist organizations, and a report on how UPMC honored the late Dr. Amy Stine with a holistic medicine conference. All of these stories are also available, along with audio podcasts and more, here on Peaceburgh.
